Root Canal
Root canals are also known as root canal therapy or root canal treatments, and are very
common dental procedures throughout the United States. Root canals involve the removal of
infected or diseased pulp found inside a tooth.
The pulp found inside teeth is located in a pulp chamber located in the center of each tooth.
This pulp chamber branches off into canals that contain blood vessels, nerves, and connective
tissues. Pulp is an important part of each tooth that serves as a supply line for growing and
developing teeth, and helps supply adequate flow of blood to surrounding gums.
Root Canal Procedure
Depending on the situation, a root canal treatment may be performed in one visit or may take a
couple of visits to complete. In most cases, the treatment procedure is as follows:
- The area surrounding the tooth will be numbed
- A hole will be drilled in the tooth to access the pulp chamber
- Infected or diseased pulp will be removed
- The dentist will measure (via x-rays) the depth and length of the root canal so that he or
she may replace removed pulp with a filling material
- The dentist will clean the root canal or canals with anti-septic
- The pulp chamber and canals are filled.
- The tooth will be covered with a temporary filling
- A crown will be fitted over the tooth to help protect and strengthen it
Who Benefits from Root Canal Procedures?
Anyone who is suffering from infection will benefit from root canal treatment. Untreated cavities
or erosion of enamel or dentin of the tooth can lead to reduced blood supply, pain, and severe
abscesses caused by bacterial infections.
Individuals who have damaged teeth may also benefit from a root canal procedure. Left
untreated, damaged teeth may become infected. Tooth infections often affect additional areas
of the mouth and jaw as well as spread infection to other parts of the body.
Choosing a Dentist
Don't let the discomfort of an infected tooth spoil your day. Prevent tooth decay and gum
disease. Let a trained dentist who belongs to the American Dental Association address your
dental needs. When it comes to experience and expertise, Dr. Joanne Le, located at 615 Piikoi
Street, Suite 1404 A in Honolulu, Hawaii 96814 (808-591-2115) is the best choice in Hawaii.
