Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the field of dentistry that straightens teeth and jaw structures. Orthodontic
procedures help improve speech and correct jaw injuries or deformities that interfere with
chewing. In most cases, orthodontic procedures are performed on teenagers to improve
smiles, self-confidence, and alignment.
Common Orthodontic Procedures
These days, orthodontists are able to take advantage of a multitude of different styles of braces,
including tooth colored ceramic style braces or clear plastic braces, depending on need and
availability.
Traditional orthodontic braces follow a few basic steps.
- Metal braces or bands are placed around each tooth.
- Brackets are attached to these bands to hold wires in place that are slowly tightened in
order to adjust gaps between teeth and align teeth within the upper and lower jaw.
- Bands are bonded to each tooth with a non-damaging substance
- Arch wires attached to each band gently guide teeth into position over a period of time,
usually around 12 to 18 months.
Invisalign treatments - are a newer type of orthodontic procedure.
- Utilizes a clear plastic mold that fits over the teeth.
- No braces or bands are used in this treatment.
- Clear retainers or "trays" are placed over the teeth, to be replaced in roughly two-week
increments in order to achieve desired results.
- Each retainer is designed to encourage teeth to move into proper positioning and
alignment. For most cases, an individual may need between 15 and 30 retainers to
complete the Invisalign treatment.
Who Benefits from Orthodontic Dental Procedures?
Everyone can benefit from receiving orthodontic procedures to straighten teeth, improve
appearance, self-confidence, and chewing ability. From children, teenagers, and adults,
orthodontic care can make a big difference.
