Understanding Gum Diseases

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, afflicts millions of people around the United
States, and is the cause of major tooth decay, chewing disabilities, pain and discomfort and
the destruction of healthy, bright smiles. In most of those cases, gum disease could have been
prevented through proper dental and oral hygiene care.  Understanding gum disease will help
individuals take better care of their teeth and gums as well as encourage prompt treatment
when dental issues arise.

Types of Gum Disease:

  • Gingivitis – Is a mild form of periodontal disease most often seen with the appearance
of red or swollen gums that bleed easily
  • Periodontitis - Is a more severe form of periodontal disease caused by bacteria and
plaque growing beneath the gum line to create inflammation as well as destruction of
    tissue and bone.

Several sub varieties of periodontitis may also be diagnosed, including aggressive and chronic
periodontitis, which results in bone destruction and loss. Left untreated, periodontitis may also
lead to systemic health problems as bacteria travels from blood vessels and tissues in the
mouth to other areas of the body.

Gum Disease Treatments

Individuals suffering from varying degrees of gingivitis and periodontitis may benefit from
periodontal procedures used to treat gum disease. Such procedures include but are not
limited to:

•        Laser therapy
•        Dental implants
•        Cosmetic procedures
•        Nonsurgical treatments
•        Periodontal surgery

A dentist will determine the correct treatment or procedure depending on the severity as well as
the degree of gum disease. In many cases, early cases of gingivitis may be treated through
better oral hygiene care, regular cleanings and preventative maintenance checkups.
