Know Your Options When It Comes to Fillings

There is a multitude of filling materials that dentists use these days to repair damaged, worn or
cavity-filled teeth. These fillings are designed according to where the fillings are to be placed,
the task they are to perform as well as the overall appearance desired by a patient. Dental
fillings are created using different materials and alloys.

Two major types of dental fillings:

  • Amalgam
  • Composite

Amalgam fillings are the most common and are also the oldest type of filling used by dentists
in the United States. They are resistant to wear and tear, durable and fairly inexpensive.
Combining metallic elements such as copper, tin, silver and mercury typically creates dental
amalgam. Patients need not be concerned about the mercury in dental amalgam because
when combined with other metal alloys is rendered safe as well as stable.

Dental amalgam is generally used to fill cavities or damaged teeth found at the back of the
mouth, because of its ability to withstand high chew load and impact.

Mixing resin materials with minute amounts of glass or quartz creates composite fillings. This
type of filling is generally used in smaller tooth restorations that don't experience degrees of
chewing pressure.

Who Benefits from Amalgam or Composite Fillings?

Anyone who has chipped or cracked teeth as well as those suffering from cavities will benefit
from amalgam or composite dental fillings. Fillings help prevent additional damage and tooth
decay that may lead to gum disease.
